“Who are you dressed as Lucy?” Leo’s mum asked while sitting at the dinner table the night of World Book Day. Lucy and Leo’s family eat dinner together once a week. Tonight, both kids are dressed as a character from their favourite book, after having been in character parades at school.
“I am dressed as Georgie from The Dog Who Saved the World”, Lucy answered, “she is an eleven-year-old, who along with her dog, Mr Mash, save the world using virtual reality and 3D goggles”. Under Lucy’s arm is a soft toy Dachshund with a handmade collar that has his name written on it. On her forehead Lucy has thick black goggles which are her pretend 3D goggles. “And Leo, who are you dressed as?” Asks Lucy’s mum.
“Can’t you guess?” Leo asks. “I’m Alvin Ho. We’re similar but we’re not. He’s Asian like me, but he is scared of everything! I’m not like that, I’m brave”. Leo has on white shoes with jeans and a yellow jacket, with Alvin’s signature yellow bucket hat on his head. “Did either of you win the dress up competitions in your classes?” Lucy’s mum wants to know.
“No” they both answered passionately. “Winning was not the point of the day mum!” Lucy says. “Our school raised almost five hundred dollars today and we are going to use the money to buy books for kids that can’t afford them. Everyone deserves to have books to read, how else could they find characters that they want to be like”,
“I think Alvin is so funny, even though he is scared of everything” says Leo. “Sounds like you have all learnt a wonderful lesson and raised money for a good cause” Leo’s mum says.
World Book Day or International Book Day is celebrated on the 23rd of April each year. Depending on what country you are in it is celebrated differently. In Catalonia, in Spain, they give each other gifts of books and in the United Kingdom they raise money for charities. However, the thing that every country has in common is an opportunity to share a love of reading and the amazing characters that authors create by giving and raising money, just like the kid’s school has done.
